Our Story

About SHIN'AFRIKA

The premium magazine bridging Black America, Africa, the Caribbean, and the global diaspora.

We Exist to Tell the Stories Others Overlook

SHIN'AFRIKA was founded on a simple conviction: the stories of Black America, Africa, and the Caribbean are not peripheral to global journalism — they are central to it. For too long, the diaspora has been reported on rather than reported for.

We are a reader-funded, editorially independent magazine committed to world-class journalism that connects, informs, and dignifies the 1.5 billion people of the African diaspora worldwide.

Our name says it all — Shin'Afrika means "See Africa" in Wolof. But we are not just looking at Africa. We are looking at all the places Africa went, and all the ways those places are finding their way back to each other.

What We Stand For

The editorial principles that guide every story we publish

01

Editorial Independence

We accept no funding from governments, political parties, or advertisers who seek editorial influence. Our journalism is funded by readers and donors only.

02

Diaspora-First Perspective

We do not report on the diaspora for outside audiences. We report for the diaspora — assuming knowledge, respecting intelligence, and centering lived experience.

03

Rigorous Reporting

Every claim is verified. Every source is protected. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of fact-checking and editorial integrity.

04

Pan-African Unity

We believe the connections between Black America, Africa, and the Caribbean are a source of strength — and that journalism can make those connections stronger.

05

Economic Justice

Our contributors are paid fairly. We do not solicit free labour. We believe journalism is work, and work deserves compensation.

06

Multilingual Reach

The diaspora speaks English, French, Portuguese, Wolof, Swahili, and dozens of other languages. We are committed to reaching them in theirs.
