INTERVIEW

Dady Djamba
President, Congolese Community of Washington Metropolitan (CCWM)
Founder & CEO, Kimvuka Connect (pp. 48 to 51)

Interview conducted in Washington, D.C.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is often described by its challenges, but I believe it should be defined by its opportunities. As a Congolese leader in the diaspora, I have witnessed the resilience, talent, and determination of our people both at home and abroad. My vision is to build bridges between the DRC and the world by promoting investment, innovation, partnerships, and renewed confidence in our country’s future.

1. International coverage of the Democratic Republic of the Congo often centers on conflict and instability. In your view, what dimensions of today’s Congo deserve far greater international recognition?

For too long, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been viewed primarily through the lens of conflict. While challenges remain, that perspective overlooks a nation of extraordinary opportunity.

The DRC is blessed with immense natural resources, vast agricultural potential, exceptional biodiversity, and one of the world’s youngest populations. We are also witnessing encouraging progress through entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and stronger engagement from the Congolese diaspora. The qualification of the Leopards for the 2026 FIFA World Cup demonstrated our resilience, unity, and national pride while presenting a more positive image of our country to the world. Look beyond the headlines, DRC is a country of opportunity, resilience, and promise.

2. Despite the challenges the country continues to face, what recent developments give you the greatest reason for optimism about the future of the DRC?

What gives me the greatest optimism is the resilience and ambition of the Congolese people, especially our youth. Across the country, young entrepreneurs are embracing technology, launching businesses, and creating innovative solutions. At the same time, infrastructure development, regional cooperation, and increased diaspora engagement are opening new opportunities for investment and economic growth. The future of the DRC will not be defined by its challenges but by the determination of its people.

3. The Democratic Republic of the Congo possesses immense mineral wealth, fertile agricultural land, vast forests, abundant water resources, and major hydroelectric potential. What must happen for these assets to be transformed into sustainable and inclusive prosperity for the Congolese people?

Natural resources alone do not create prosperity, leadership does. The DRC must continue strengthening good governance, transparency, infrastructure, and education while encouraging local value addition instead of exporting raw materials. We must build industries that create jobs, empower local entrepreneurs, and promote innovation. Sustainable prosperity also depends on protecting our natural environment, strengthening institutions, and ensuring that economic growth benefits communities across the country. When visionary leadership transforms natural wealth into human development, the DRC will unlock its full economic potential and build lasting prosperity for future generations.

4. Beyond mining, which sectors currently offer the strongest opportunities for investors from the African diaspora, African Americans, and international partners?

Mining will remain important, but the future of the DRC extends far beyond minerals.

Agriculture, renewable energy, digital technology, infrastructure, tourism, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and the digital economy all offer exceptional opportunities. These sectors meet local needs while serving regional and international markets. Investors who think long-term and build partnerships based on innovation, sustainability, and local value creation will discover one of Africa’s most promising investment destinations. The future of the DRC extends far beyond mining.

5. Agriculture is increasingly seen as one of Africa’s most strategic sectors. How can agribusiness help create jobs, strengthen food security, and diversify the Congolese economy?

Agriculture can become the engine of the Congolese economy. With its fertile land, favorable climate, and abundant water resources, the DRC has the capacity to feed its population and contribute significantly to Africa’s food security. Modern farming, agro-processing, better infrastructure, and access to financing can create millions of jobs while reducing food imports.

Agriculture is not simply an economic sector, it is the foundation of sustainable prosperity.

6. The Congolese diaspora continues to contribute in entrepreneurship, education, healthcare, technology, and community development. How can these contributions be strengthened and better aligned with national development goals?

The Congolese diaspora is one of our nation’s greatest strategic assets. Beyond financial remittances, it contributes expertise, innovation, entrepreneurship, and global networks.

Through my leadership of the Congolese Community of Washington Metropolitan (CCWM) and Kimvuka Connect, I have witnessed firsthand how the diaspora can unite communities, build strategic partnerships, and transform ideas into opportunities for national development.

At Kimvuka Connect, we bring together Congolese professionals, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and development partners to advance dialogue on investment, trade, healthcare, and sustainable development. These collaborations demonstrate how the diaspora can connect global expertise with local opportunities. The Congolese diaspora is not just a supporter of development – it is a strategic partner in building the future of the DRC.

7. With one of the youngest populations in the world, the DRC holds immense human potential. What message would you share with young Congolese who aspire to become entrepreneurs, innovators, and future leaders?

Believe in your potential and never stop learning. Success requires discipline, integrity, resilience, and the courage to innovate. Don’t wait for opportunities, create them. Every successful entrepreneur begins by solving a problem. The future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be shaped by young leaders who choose innovation over excuses, collaboration over division, and service over self-interest. They are not just the future of our country; they are already building it today.

8. SHIN’AFRIKA Magazine is committed to strengthening relationships between Africa and Black America. How can Congolese communities, African immigrants, and African Americans work together to build stronger economic, educational, and cultural partnerships?

Our shared history should become our shared future. Together, we can expand partnerships in business, education, technology, tourism, culture, and youth leadership. Universities, entrepreneurs, businesses, and community organizations all have a role to play.

By investing together, exchanging knowledge, and celebrating our shared heritage, we can create opportunities that strengthen both Africa and Black America and contribute to shared prosperity.

9. If you had one minute to convince someone who has never visited the DRC, what would you say? Which destinations, cultural experiences, and natural wonders should every visitor discover?

I would say this: if you’re looking for one of the world’s last great undiscovered destinations, the Democratic Republic of the Congo should be at the top of your list.

Begin in Kinshasa, one of Africa’s most vibrant capitals, where you’ll experience world-famous Congolese rumba, exceptional cuisine, fashion, and culture. Visit the Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary, cruise the legendary Congo River, and witness the spectacular Livingstone Falls.

Then escape to the Atlantic beaches of Muanda, where the ocean meets the mighty Congo River. Continue to Virunga National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas and the breathtaking Nyiragongo Volcano. Discover the beauty of Lake Kivu, explore Goma and Bukavu, and experience the history and hospitality of Kisangani, Lubumbashi, and Kananga.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is more than a destination – it is an adventure, a cultural treasure, and one of Africa’s greatest untold stories. Come and experience the Congo for yourself.

10. What message would you like to send to international investors who are considering opportunities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?
My message is simple: this is the time to discover the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The DRC is one of Africa’s most promising investment destinations. Beyond its abundant natural resources, it offers exceptional opportunities in agriculture, energy, technology, infrastructure, manufacturing, tourism, healthcare, and the digital economy, supported by a young and dynamic workforce.

The business environment continues to improve through reforms that strengthen investor confidence and facilitate business creation. Institutions such as the National Agency for Investment Promotion (ANAPI), the One-Stop Shop for Business Creation (GUCE), and the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI) play an important role in promoting investment, simplifying administrative procedures, and supporting eligible investors through the incentives provided under the Congolese Investment Code.

You will not walk this journey alone. The Congolese diaspora is ready to connect investors with trusted local partners, market insights, and strategic networks. Through Kimvuka Connect, we are committed to building bridges between international investors, the Congolese diaspora, and key institutions in the DRC to foster sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships. The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Washington, D.C. also serves as an important gateway for strengthening economic and commercial cooperation between the DRC and the United States.

I invite investors to visit the DRC, meet its people, explore its opportunities, and experience its tremendous potential firsthand. Invest with confidence. Invest with purpose. Build with the DRC. Together, we can shape one of Africa’s next great economic success stories.
